Thank you for this essay, Hal. I always find something (or many things) in your writing that resonates, inspires and/or gets me thinking. And I imagine ‘Jim’ might reflect back on your shared interaction at least once throughout his day and once again feel your warm attention.

From a fellow optimist.

Living alone, I value the chance encounters I have with strangers. You’re having a common experience. It’s brief and usually direct. Feels like you are tapping into your shared humanity. Often, it’s just what you need to feel connected, and hopefully the other person feels the same.

Totally agree, Rhonda. It's just a moment, but it carries meaning that lasts, hopefully for both parties. I can't tell you how many times I've been checking out at a store, the clerk ask me how I am today, I reply that I'm fine (or not) and then ask them (sincerely) how they are doing. Uniformly, they respond with surprise and a warm response. Much better than "fine" - "fine." When I'm visiting Austin, I encounter warmer and more sincere exchanges like this. Less so in big cities or in the northeast. Just more layers to get through.

Hal, I could literally hear your voice as I read the dialogue exchange between you and the man in the grocery store (smile!)

Here's the thing, Hal, you've always been that person - the one who cares, who asks the thoughtful and engaging question.

Your care and concern for humanity has shown itself throughout your long and impactful career in academia (imagine, and maybe you have already) the many thousands of participipants in your reseaech studies, the undergrad students, the very lucky (me) grad students, and your precious family and friends - not to mention peoole who serve in cafes or men in checkout lines.

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree - "Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me."

In the final analysis - of it all - maybe THAT is the point❤️

You've done - and are doing - just that!

Many bkessings, Jane
