I have been more or less "absent" for a while, stunned a bit by grief, as you know, my friend. But this week I poked my head up out of the mire and finally read your all of your first columns and shared them with some special friends. They are REMARKABLE, Hal, and this--THIS ONE--is my favorite so far! Keep writing! So many will learn!

My dear Pat, I've been holding you in my thoughts these past weeks, and I figured you were just trying to keep putting one foot in front of another. My very best to you now and ongoing. Thanks for your encouraging remarks here. This particular column just flowed --- it was sparked by the news of Donald Sutherland's death, but that immediately triggered an avalanche of feelings and memories. Strong ones. I'm so glad you found it relatable. I've been writing for my entire life, but this new era is more satisfying than ever. I'm sure you have millions of stories and perspectives of your own to share. The beauty of Substack is that it is so inclusive. People write about all kinds of things, and (so far) I have not encountered any trolls or cranks. Who would have thought that our working together on the AFA board decades ago would have led here! Take care, my friend!

Yes. Watched the moved again last year. Outstanding acting all around and impressive directorial debut for Redford.

Terrific summary, Hal, and good insights. I watched that film repeatedly as well. Such great acting and so full of deeply human drama and tragedy. I identified most with Conrad. I'm going to watch it again now! Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks Brian. I hadn't thought about it for quite a while, but Sutherland's passing immediately got me on that track. Conrad, yes. But I also empathized with the Dad (I was a young father at that time), and the psychiatrist too. And great tenderness for the Mom's suffering.
